Rather than scrap the Xbox Live Gold service, Microsoft is apparently rebranding it into a new Game Pass tier dubbed Xbox Game Pass Core.ĭespite the name change, it will function almost exactly like Xbox Live Gold, offering online multiplayer for the same subscription fee. However, it sounds like that’s not quite the case. Since Xbox Live Gold is needed to access online multiplayer, this seemed to suggest that the feature would become completely free, much like how it is for free-to-play titles like Fortnite. There was chatter of Microsoft discontinuing its Xbox Live Gold service as far back as 2020, with it later claimed that the company is simply waiting for more people to subscribe to Xbox Game Pass before it does so. New games will be added two to three times a year As for the curated library of games you can access at no extra cost, Microsoft has confirmed 19 titles so far (the full list can be found on the website), with plans to announce more before September 14.
